South Vietnam agreed to pay for all the costs ($17 million) of the “strategic hamlet program,” deemed essential to its fight against the NLF.  1

South Vietnamese security forces occupied Buddhist pagodas and arrested many priests. A UN mission to investigate charges of persecution arrived on Oct. 24.  2

The Diem government was overthrown by Gen. Duong Van Minh and other officers. Diem and his security chief were killed. NLF military successes and the lack of political reforms under Diem led to the coup, with the complicity of the U.S. The new regime proved no better. More and more U.S. troops were committed to the war in South Vietnam.  3
