| When Soviet-Japanese peace negotiations reached an impasse over the disposition of the Kurile Islands, the two powers agreed to postpone discussion of the issue and to proceed with the negotiation of a peace treaty. | 2 |

| A Soviet-Japanese peace declaration ended the 11-year state of war. The treaty left unresolved the question of the Kurile Islands. The USSR recognized Japanese sovereignty over Habomai and Shikotan Islands. Other provisions of the settlement included establishing diplomatic relations, Soviet support of Japanese application for UN membership, repatriation of Japanese prisoners of war, and the relinquishing of reparations from Japan. | 3 |
