In a public declaration of Taiwanese autonomy Pres. Lee announced Taiwan's abandonment of the long-standing “One China” policy. A possible threat to international peace, Pres. Lee's new policy with regard to Chinese relations held that Taiwan would work with China on a state-to-state basis.  1
 
Aug. 18
 
Pres. Lee's Taiwan government expressed interest in being included in a proposed anti-missile defense system with its Asian allies. This public defiance of Beijing was reported to have infuriated the Chinese government.  2
