Hua Guofeng announced that the Chinese, excepting minority peoples, should limit the size of their families to one child. Soon thereafter, a revised marriage law was issued setting slightly older minimum ages for marriage: 22 for men and 20 for women, though recommendations had been made for higher minimums. | 1 |

The Gang of Four was put on trial by the Deng regime, together with Chen Boda and five top army officers long held for complicity in the Lin Biao affair. Jiang Qing and one other Cultural Revolution leader were given death sentences (Jan. 25, 1981), later commuted to life imprisonment. Others received assorted prison terms. Hua Guofeng soon all but disappeared from any important government role. | 2 |
