The CCP began to undertake land reform in the areas of China under their control. Peasant associations were formed; landlords were publicly tried, and many were killed.  1
 
1947, Jan. 29
 
The U.S. officially abandoned its mediation efforts. Gen. Marshall, in his final report, criticized both the reactionaries in the GMD and the extremists in the Communist camp, who prevented a compromise.  2
 
Feb
 
Jiang Jieshi's men, having begun preparations to make his base of operations in Taiwan as early as late 1945 and having appointed a crew of corrupt officials, found public anger exploding there. The GMD troops killed as many as 10,000, including many respected citizens.  3
 
March 19
 
GMD military successes against the Communists culminated in the capture of the Communist capital of Yan'an. An almost immediate reversal resulted in Communist control over Manchuria by the end of 1947.  4
 
Nov. 21–23
 
Elections for the National Assembly aroused little popular interest. Most of the candidates belonged to the GMD, because the Communists and the Democratic League had been excluded.  5
On the eve of defeat in the war (Aug. 1945), Japanese scientists in Harbin, working on chemical and biological weapons and having already committed unspeakable atrocities on thousands of live Chinese subjects, released (rather than killed) plague-infested rats. In the year 1947, 30,000 people died of bubonic plague.  6
Inflation and popular discontent were becoming widespread. Strikes among workers increased. Rice, cooking oil, and flour prices skyrocketed.  7
