Sukarno, who retained the titles of president and supreme commander, was obliged to surrender his remaining powers to Gen. Suharto. The latter dismissed many officials of the old regime and did his utmost to undo Sukarno's economic policies: drastic measures were introduced to check the almost fantastic inflation, foreign debts were renegotiated, and foreign-owned properties were restored to their owners. At the same time a drive was launched on every form of corruption, in the army as well as the administration.  1

Gen. Suharto was given full presidential powers for five years by the People's Consultative Congress.  2

The UN–supervised referendum in West Irian (West New Guinea) led to annexation of that territory by Indonesia (approval of UN General Assembly, Nov. 19, 1969).  3

Reorganization and amalgamation of the military services to reduce duplication and factional rivalries. At the same time the police forces were demilitarized.  4
