Thai premier Chuan Leekpai was forced to disband Parliament because of the withdrawal of the Palang Dharma Party from the ruling coalition.  1
 
1997, July 2
 
Thailand devalued its currency, sparking great international concern. This was one of the first signs of what became a growing economic crisis in the whole region. On Aug. 1 a group of Asian nations led by Japan joined with the International Monetary Fund to pledge $16 billion in loans to Thailand in hopes of stabilizing the economy.  2
