Gen. Suchinda Kraprayoon, the main figure behind the 1991 coup, assumed leadership of the government.  2

Several weeks of peaceful demonstrations against the military-led government led to violent confrontations when the military tried to suppress them.  3

King Phumiphol Adulyadet interceded to force the resignation of Gen. Suchinda, eventually also interceding to approve the reappointment of Anand Panyarachun as interim prime minister until elections could be held.  4
