The national convention, consisting of delegates from the 135 ethnic and functional groups in the country, opened with the stated purpose of determining principles on which a new constitution would be based.  1
 
1998, Aug. 21
 
The NLD pressed the ruling junta (SPDC) to reconvene Myanmar's parliament.  2
 
Sept. 16
 
The NLD, led by Suu Kyi, declared itself to be the legal parliament of Myanmar and claimed null and void all junta legislation passed since 1990. After this uprising, the ruling State Peace and Development Council (SPDC) incarcerated hundreds of opposition-party members. While the UN increased sanctions against the junta government on Oct. 27, the number of imprisoned NLD members rose to over 220.  3
