Aung San Suu Kyi was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in absentia. She had continued to be held under house arrest since July 1989, refusing to voluntarily leave the country.  1

The SLORC of the military regime showed signs of finally responding to increasingly strong international pressures to institute reforms and to introduce new policies of liberalization.  2

Gen. Than Shwe replaced Gen. Saw Maung as the head of the SLORC. Gen. Ne Win was still believed to have veto power over the most important matters of state, even though he no longer handled day-to-day matters.  3
Gen. Than Shwe became prime minister.  4

The SLORC declared a cease-fire on the Karen insurrection front.  5
