The former prime minister, Nawaz Sharif, was sentenced to two life imprisonment terms for hijacking and terrorism. Sharif had tried to prevent a commercial airliner, containing Gen. Musharraf and 200 other passengers, from landing in Pakistan. This action had precipitated the 1999 military coup.  1
 
May 12
 
Pakistan's supreme court legalized Musharraf's government overthrow by recognizing his as the legitimate government. Musharraf promised to return the country to civilian rule within three years.  2
