Bhutto's daughter, Benazir Bhutto, returned to Pakistan from Britain to revive the PPP. Her tumultuous welcome in Lahore was followed by a four-week tour. Although she attracted huge crowds, her unilateral appeal for the observance of Black Day (the anniversary of the day when Zia overthrew her father and seized power in 1977) proved to be unsuccessful in July, doubtless because she was keeping her distance from the other antigovernment leaders in the MRD. In August she was placed under house arrest. | 2 |
