Pres. Iskander Mirza dismissed the prime minister, annulled the constitution, and declared martial law. He appointed the commander in chief of the army, Gen. Mohammed Ayub Khan, as administrator of martial law.  1

GEN. MOHAMMED AYUB KHAN BECAME PRESIDENT (to 1970), after forcing the resignation of Iskander Mirza. Military government was introduced for the first of several times, in the interest of maintaining stability and achieving effective rule.  2
