Prime Minister Liaqat Ali Khan was assassinated while addressing a public meeting. On the next day Governor-General Khwaja Nazimuddin assumed leadership of the dominion.  1

In the face of a growing economic crisis of famine proportions, Governor-General Ghulam Mohammed dismissed the cabinet and Prime Minister Nazimuddin, and named Mohammed Ali, leader of the progressives in the Muslim League Party, as prime minister.  2
