| The opposition to Congress called a general strike, which proved most effective in West Bengal, Kerala, and Karnataka. Severe drought in northwest India exacerbated opposition to the Congress (I) government. Both the opposition and Congress (I) were affected by increased Hindu-Muslim tension.
