Former Kashmiri prime minister Sheik Muhammad Abdullah, who was released on Jan. 8 after four and a half years of detention, charged that India had set up an illegal regime in Kashmir. On Jan. 13 he asked for a plebiscite to settle the Indian-Pakistani dispute over Kashmir.  1

The government refused to recognize Tibet's Dalai Lama as heading a “separate” government of Tibet functioning in India.  2

Pres. Rajendra Prasad issued a proclamation taking over the state government of Kerala and ousting its Communist regime.  3
