Pres. Zeroual vowed to destroy Islamic fundamentalist groups attempting to overthrow his government.  1

Bloody assassinations continued, with civil strife and political murders claiming the lives of over 40,000 people in 7 years. From attacks on government officials and intellectuals, violence escalated to include the indiscriminate killing of defenseless villagers. The widespread and startlingly random violence remained largely out of the hands of the ineffectual military and government. Algeria's government continued to refuse international help, and its civil war, which had remained hidden from most other nations, raged on.  2
