Pres. Benjedid resigned his office amid widespread turmoil and political uncertainty. The Higher State Council, headed by Muhammad Boudiaf, assumed power with the backing of the military and nullified the results of the Dec. elections. Over the next month, the FIS and other Islamicist groups sponsored nationwide protests that often entailed violent clashes with police.  1
