Abolition of foreign schools, which were restructured as Egyptian private schools under the supervision of the Ministry of Education.  2

A new labor code established a minimum wage and maximum number of working hours per day. Employees won the right to form labor associations (though only under government supervision) and were to receive a share of profits. Women secured additional benefits including exemption from night work and protection against firing if they married or had children.  3

Start of construction on the HIGH DAM AT ASWAN with Soviet assistance. The project was eventually completed in Jan. 1968.  4

Nationalization of Bank Misr and the National Bank. In May, the press was also put under government control. By July 1961, the entire import trade of the country and most of the export trade had been nationalized.  5
 
July
 
Start of television broadcasting in Cairo. Egypt became the first Arab state to operate its own television station.  6
