About 350,000 Palestinian refugees arrived in the aftermath of the second Arab-Israeli War. Another 65,000 immigrated to Jordan (1967–89).  2

CIVIL WAR began after the Jordanian army attacked Palestinian guerrilla camps inside Jordan. The Jordanian government had been growing increasingly nervous about the disruptive role that the Palestinians might be willing to play in Jordanian politics. The guerrillas, who received active support from Syria, were gradually defeated and by July 1971 had been completely expelled.  3

King Husayn declared the Jordanian National Union as the only legal political party.  4

Jordan became the first Arab state to broadcast on two television channels.  5

Indefinite suspension of Parliament.  6

Creation of the National Consultative Council (60 appointed members), which took the place of the dissolved Parliament.  7
