Israeli prime minister Ehud Barak met Syrian foreign minister Farouk al-Sharan in Washington, D.C.; the meeting marked the continuation of talks between the two nations after four years of silence. Progress was made in discussions about the peaceful resumption of Syrian control over Golan Heights, a long-disputed area between the two countries.  3
