Election of Abu al-Hasan Bani Sadr as president of the new Islamic Republic. He later displeased Khomeini, who removed him from office (June 22, 1981).  1
 
1981, June 28
 
Bombing of the Islamic Republican Party's headquarters in Tehran by the Mujahidin, leaving 120 dead, including Muhammad Husayni Bihishti, the leader of the party. A second attack, in which the prime minister's office was bombed (Aug. 31), claimed the lives of Pres. Muhammad Ali Rajai (elected on July 25) and Prime Minister Muhammad Javad Bahunar, among others. Over the next 18 months, the government conducted extensive counterterrorist operations. The most notable victim was Musa Khaybani, leader of the Mujahidin-i Khalq, assassinated by Iranian security forces on Feb. 8, 1982.  2
