Formation of the Turkish Federated State of Cyprus in the northern part of the island. The Turkish minority proposed to link it to the Greek portion of the island by federation. A constitution was approved (June 8), and Rauf Denkta was elected president (June 20, 1976).  1
 
1977, Aug. 3
 
Death of Archbishop Makarios (b. 1913). Spyros Kiprianou, president of the House of Representatives, became the new president.  2
 
1978, Feb. 10
 
Disbandment of EOKA, the secret terrorist organization run by Greek Cypriots.  3
 
1981, June 28
 
Reelection of Rauf Denkta as president of northern Cyprus.  4
 
1983, Nov
 
The Turkish Cypriot state unilaterally declared itself independent and became the Turkish Republic of North Cyprus. Turkey was the only country to recognize the new state and exchange ambassadors with it. The U.N. Security Council issued a condemnation (May 11, 1984).  5
 
1985, May 5
 
Turkish Cypriots approved a new constitution. Denkta was reelected as president (June 9).  6
 
July 5
 
The Turkish government rejected a UN proposal to reunite Cyprus despite Greek Cypriot approval (June 12) because it had not been consulted earlier. The UN presented a second plan (June 11, 1986), but this time it was scotched by the Greek Cypriots.  7
