The Turkish Islamic Welfare Party, led by Necmettin Erbakan, formed a coalition government with a secular party, making Erbakan the new premier.  1
 
1997, Feb. 15
 
More than 8,000 people, most of them women, protested in Ankara against governmental actions to enforce Islamic law. On April 26 Premier Erbakan agreed to retain secularism in Turkey.  2
 
June 18
 
Erbakan resigned as premier under pressure from the military. On June 30 the president appointed Mesut Yilmaz the new premier and approved a secular government.  3
