A law was passed forbidding student, teacher, and soldier associations; Marxist organizations; and groups promoting religious or cultural differences.	1

First national elections under the new constitution. The Motherland Party, a coalition of liberal and Islamicist groups, won a majority in Parliament (211 of 400 seats), and its leader, Turgut Özal, became prime minister. The major policy of the new government was to encourage private industry and scale back the public sector of the economy.	2
