Responding to pleas from the Kuwaiti government, the U.S. announced that it would provide naval escorts for all Kuwaiti ships sailing under the U.S. flag in the Persian Gulf. Kuwait had requested U.S. protection after several Iranian attacks on Arab shipping in the Gulf. The Iranian actions had been provoked by previous Iraqi attacks (1986) on ships calling in Iranian ports. | 2 |
