The British government proposed that Antigua, Dominica, St. Lucia, St. Vincent, Grenada, and St. Kitts-Nevis-Anguilla each become a state associated with the U.K., with complete autonomy and the power to declare for independence. The British government was to provide defense and control foreign relations. This culminated in the establishment of the Associated States of the United Kingdom.  1

BRITISH GUIANA BECAME AN INDEPENDENT STATE within the British Commonwealth, assuming the name Guyana. Forbes Burnham became the first prime minister.  2
 
1967, April 11
 
Death of Prime Minister Sir Donald Sangster, of Jamaica. He was succeeded by Hugh Shearer.  3
 
May 30
 
The island of Anguilla declared its independence, leaving the Associated Territories of St. Kitts-Nevis-Anguilla. Though this act was supported by a popular vote (July 11), it was disapproved by the British government.  4
 
Oct
 
The heads of Commonwealth Caribbean governments at Barbados met with representatives of the U.K., the U.S., and Canada. They agreed to establish the Regional Development Bank and the Caribbean Population Research Center, and to adopt measures securing freedom of trade.  5
