Some economic recovery occurred as the inflation rate dropped from 100 percent to less than 5 percent. Tourism in 1991 earned $880 million.  1

The U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency released charges that two senior government officials were involved in a trafficking ring. The charges confirmed beliefs that the Dominican Republic had become a drug conduit.  2
 
1994, Aug. 2
 
Results of the presidential election showed an aging conservative leader, Joaquín Balaguer, narrowly defeating José Francisco Peña Gomez amid widespread charges of fraud. Peña Gomez had sought to become the first black Dominican president, and racism had been a major issue in the campaign.  3
 
Aug. 16
 
Balaguer inaugurated as president, but his term was reduced to two years by an accord with five opposition parties who alleged that the incumbent president had gained reelection through fraud.  4
