Bosch took office as the country's first constitutionally elected president since 1924. He was a well-known anti-Trujillo journalist and reformer who had pledged agrarian reform. Bosch immediately went to work on a new constitution, providing for a democratic system. He was opposed by traditional elites who, fearing their country would become “another Cuba,” quickly began to work for his removal.  1
 
Sept. 25
 
Military leaders overthrew the government of Pres. Bosch in a bloodless coup. The U.S. suspended diplomatic ties and economic aid. In the following months, conflict between pro-Bosch constitutionalists (mainly students and laborers) and the military escalated to the point of civil war.  2
