In the referendum, voters rejected statehood: 48.4 percent favored current commonwealth status, 46.2 percent supported statehood, and only 4.4 percent voted for independence.  1

Gov. Pedro Rosselló won reelection on the New Progressive Party ticket with 57 percent of the vote.  2
 
1998, March 4
 
The U.S. House of Representatives passed legislation that would provide a referendum to determine Puerto Rico's permanent political status with regard to statehood. A vote in favor of statehood would have enabled the Congress to legislate for a 51st state in 1999, possibly admitting Puerto Rico to the union within the following ten years.  3

The Puerto Rican electorate voted against statehood by a margin of 50.2 percent to 46.5 percent.  4
