On the eve of the release of the UN Truth Commission Report detailing human rights abuses during the civil war, Defense Minister Gen. René Emilio Ponce resigned, prompted by information that linked him to the 1989 murder of the Jesuit priests. The report (released on March 15) attributed 85 percent of the human rights atrocities during the war to the military and right-wing death squads.  1
