A congressional inquiry into corruption began after police discovered millions stashed in the home of a former government accounting official. Two cabinet ministers and 19 members of Congress were implicated.  1
 
1994, Jan. 21
 
A special investigative committee of the Brazilian congress recommended the expulsion of 19 fellow lawmakers for involvement in a multi-million-dollar kickback scheme.  2

FERNANDO HENRIQUE CARDOSO became president of Brazil and vowed to end high inflation rates. Cardoso's landslide victory over Workers' Party candidate Luis Inácio Lula da Silva (favored in early polls) was attributed to the success of the “Real Plan” (July 1) in ending hyperinflation; the plan was developed while Cardoso was serving as minister of the economy.  3
