The government introduced the Plan Cruzado, aimed at stopping inflation (which stood at 230 percent in 1985) by wage and price freezes. After some initial success, rampant inflation resumed.  1

The regime introduced Plan Cruzado II. The new austerity program led to devaluation of the currency and price hikes.  2

Two major union confederations, the Single Workers' Central (CUT) and the General Workers' Command (CGT), launched a general strike opposing the austerity plan.  3
