Pres. Lleras Camargo announced a cabinet composed of six Liberals, six Conservatives, and one military figure.  2

Fearing social revolution, the government launched a heavily publicized but insubstantial land reform. The reform coincided with new military efforts, with U.S. aid, to eradicate guerrilla movements in the countryside.  3

Guillermo León Valencia, endorsed by the National Union Coalition, won the presidential election.  4

A state of siege was instated to control student unrest and disturbances resulting from the economic crisis.  5
 
1966
 
Founding of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC). This organization, along with others such as the National Liberation Army (ELN) and the April 19 Movement (M-19), had ties to the peasant mobilizations of the 1950s and continued to grow despite repeated efforts at suppression.  6
