Enrique Hertzog, leader of the Republican Socialist Union Party, was elected president. Several attempts by the MNR to overthrow the government were unsuccessful.  1
 
1949, May 1
 
A strike in the tin mines in May and a rebellion by the outlawed MNR in September were put down by the army, but they left the country on the verge of bankruptcy.  2
 
Oct. 19
 
Pres. Hertzog resigned because of ill health and was succeeded by V.P. Mametro Urriolagoita. Disturbances from the Right and the Left continued.  3
