Economic recovery, based largely on timber and agricultural exports, resulted in 5.7 percent growth in 1987, but few gains went to workers. Women employed in new agricultural processing plants were paid especially low wages. Stifled by foreign debt, Pinochet agreed to trade ownership of industry for debt remissions.  1
