Carlos Mugica, priest and leader of Argentina's Third World Priests movement, was murdered by a right-wing death squad. Over the next three years, more than 20 dissident priests, including a bishop, were killed.  1

Pres. Perón died at the age of 78. He was succeeded by his vice president and widow, María Estela (Isabelita) Perón. Her regime faced extreme economic problems and was plagued by corruption and violence. Her chief adviser, the ultrarightist José Lopez Rega, was reported to head the AAA (Argentine Anti-Communist Alliance), death squads responsible for killing over 2,000 people during the winter of 1974.  2
