Pres. Eisenhower signed the document making Alaska the 49th state in the Union.  1

Soviet first deputy premier Anastas I. Mikoyan arrived in Washington, D.C., on a two-week visit to the U.S. On Jan. 19 he suggested a reduction of U.S. barriers to Russian trade, but the State Department rejected the suggestion.  2

Pres. Eisenhower proclaimed Hawaii the 50th state.  3

The Labor-Management Reporting and Disclosure Act (Landrum-Griffith Act), passed to end corruption and place new limitations on labor unions, became law.  4

Premier Nikita Khrushchev toured the U.S. (See Sept. 15–27). During the last three days he talked with Pres. Eisenhower at Camp David and agreed to hold further discussions on the Berlin issue and to expand the U.S.-USSR exchange program (The Spirit of Camp David).  5
Nearly 500,000 Cubans left their country in the wake of Fidel Castro's rise to power. Miami became a major center for the new Cuban population.  6
