Prime Minister Gediminas Vagnorius was forced to resign by the Lithuanian Supreme Council. He was replaced by Aleksandras Abisala, a right-wing independent.  1

Algirdas Brazauskas and the Lithuanian Democratic Labor Party (formerly the Communist Party) won an overwhelming victory in the parliamentary elections. When Parliament met in November, Brazauskas was elected chair, replacing Landsbergis, and Bronislovas Lubys, a Liberal and former deputy premier, was elected prime minister.  2
