President Akayev left the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, and the Kirghiz Communist Party Politburo and secretariat were retired. Party property was nationalized and funds frozen. Finally, the party's activities were suspended for six months (Aug. 30).  1

Askar Akayev, a democrat eager to develop contacts with capitalist countries, was elected president with more than 95 percent of the vote and 90 percent turnout.  2
