Three Kazakh opposition parties, the Azat (Freedom) Party, the National Democratic Party Jeltoksan, and the Republican Party, merged to form the Republican Party, Azat. Kamal Ormantayev, a member of the Kazakh Academy of Sciences, was elected chair.  4
