Fighting intensified around the regional capital, Stepankert, in Nagorno-Karabakh, a disputed area between Armenia and Azerbaijan within the Armenian enclave in Azerbaijan. A cease-fire was reached in September but was frequently violated.  1

President Mutalibov resigned after an all-night demonstration outside the Parliament building over his failure to defend Azeri lives in Nagorno-Karabakh.  2

Abulfez Elchibey, leader of the Azerbaijani Popular Front, was elected president with more than 59 percent of the vote in an election with 76 percent voter turnout.  3
