Prime Minister Ciorbea was forced to resign as a result of public dissatisfaction with his attempts to implement much-needed economic reforms. He was replaced by presidential appointment on April 1 when Radu Vasile took over as prime minister. On the same day, Romania was named as one of five nations to begin talks about future membership in the European Union.  1

Nationwide, violent protests were staged by mine workers in reaction to a government austerity plan that proposed the closing of many of Romania's mining operations.  2
 
Dec. 10
 
Romania was officially invited to apply for EU membership along with Bulgaria, Slovakia, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, and Turkey.  3
