Karamanlis resigned his premiership after being elected president. A new government was subsequently formed, with George Rallis as prime minister.  1

Greece entered the European Community. The opposition Pan-Hellenic Socialist Movement (PASOK) won a first direct election to the Parliamentary Assembly of the European Community in October.  2
 
Oct. 18
 
PASOK heavily defeated the New Democracy in general elections. Andreas Papandreou formed Greece's first Socialist government (remaining in office until 1989) and emphasized decentralization of government roles, the strengthening of a democratic basis in national life, protection of trade union activities, and even distribution of social income and wealth. In 1985 Papandreou was reelected for a second term.  3
