Forced resignation of Premier Papandreou, believed by the court to be planning to take over the Ministry of Defense and purge the army of conservative elements. The fall of the Left-Center coalition led to popular riots (July 19–21) and a general strike (July 27).  1

Papandreou's Center Union Party, still commanding a majority in the parliament, rejected the king's nominations to the premiership.  2
 
Sept. 25
 
Following the defection of a number of Papandreou's followers, Parliament voted approval of a cabinet headed by Stephanos Stephanopoulos that was a Center Union government with the support of the conservative National Radical Union.  3
