Ramiz Alia, the last Communist leader of Albania, was convicted for human rights violations and abuses of power. He was sentenced to nine years in prison.  1
 
1998, Sept
 
Domestic struggles erupted into violence between supporters of the Albanian Democratic Party and the Socialists (formerly the Communist Party of Labor). By Sept. 28 Prime Minister Fatos Nano had resigned his position. He was replaced by Pandeli Majko.  2
 
1999, March 24–June 3
 
As many as 465,000 ethnic Albanian refugees from Kosovo flooded into Albania when NATO bombing sparked violence and ethnic cleansing by Serb forces in the region. By the end of the summer, most of the Kosovar refugees had returned to their homeland.  3
 
Oct. 25
 
Premier Pandeli Majko resigned after losing a vote to retain leadership of the ruling Socialist Party. Two days later, Deputy Premier Ilir Meta succeeded Majko. The thirty-year-old Meta moved rapidly forward in his first year in office, reforming the tax and judiciary systems, privatizing business, and modernizing the economy.  4
