Croatian nationalists were tried and sentenced for antistate offenses. Leaders of the League of Communists of Croatia were purged from the Yugoslav party and state posts because of connections with nationalist activities.  1
 
1973, Feb. 21
 
A new constitution promulgated major changes, including the replacement of the existing five chambers of Parliament with a Federal Chamber and a Chamber of Republics and Provinces, the introduction of a “delegational system” of representation at all levels, and the expansion of the powers of Yugoslav workers' councils. It also recognized the sovereign status of the republics and granted to the republics and provinces the right to veto federal decisions.  2
 
1974, May 16
 
Tito was elected president of the Federal Republic for an unlimited time. After his death, an annual rotating presidency was established to prevent unrest among various ethnic groups.  3

1981–84
 
Church-state relations: popular interest in religion was renewed and was allegedly linked with nationalism. Several Catholic clergymen and a number of Muslim fundamentalists were sentenced to imprisonment for political offenses. After late 1984, religious activities were more tolerated and the first mosque in Zagreb was opened.  5
 
1981, March–Sept
 
A state of emergency in Kosovo was declared in April because ethnic Albanians rioted for independence. Albanian secessionists were sentenced to prison terms ranging from 7 to 13.5 years. A political purge was conducted in June through September in connection with the nationalist riots.  6
 
July 3
 
The Federal Assembly approved a series of constitutional amendments that reaffirmed the system of collective state and party leadership and the system of one- and two-year terms of office that came into full effect after Tito's death.  7
