The government announced broad amnesty and brought about an important change in the political situation by releasing all but a handful of political prisoners.  1

A Catholic priest in Warsaw who supported Solidarity, Jerzy Popieluszko, was kidnapped and murdered.  2
 
Oct. 27
 
A member of the government confessed to killing Father Popieluszko. In December, four suspects went on trial.  3
 
Nov. 24–25
 
Representatives of official trade unions voted to establish the National Trade Union Accord (OPZZ) to make the unions more effective. The government immediately sanctioned OPZZ and turned over to it funds that had been impounded on the suspension of Solidarity in Dec. 1981.  4
