Social Democratic Party leader and foreign minister Tarja Halonen was elected and became Finland's first female president. Publicly admired as a single mother and social activist, Halonen narrowly defeated former premier Esko Aho of the Center Party. Halonen succeeded fellow Social Democrat Martti Ahtisaari.  1
