The ruling Center-Left coalition of Denmark narrowly won a victory in general elections. Following his victorious Social Democratic Party, Premier Poul Nyrup Rasmussen retained his position as head of the Danish government.  1

Denmark citizens voted in favor of adopting the EU's Treaty of Amsterdam, a modified version of the Maastricht Treaty, which Denmark had rejected in 1992.  2
